Did I mention that it was going to snow? Yeah. It did. The Powers That Be forecast 4-6 inches of snow. We got

fourteen inches at my place. Fourteen inches of wet, heavy snow. Farther west of me, a friend had over two feet of snow. One town in Massachusetts got thirty-two inches of the white stuff. Now, normally, I don't mind snow. Kind of like it in fact. But not in October. And not when it knocks out the power to just about all of New England. Millions of people without electricity, without heat, in some cases without water. That's what happens when you throw wet, heavy snow onto trees that still have most of their leaves on them. Those trees get heavy. I mean REALLY heavy. In my yard, branches that are normally twenty feet off the ground were so heavy with snow that they were almost touching the ground. My cherry tree out front was flattened, as was the rhododendron. We were lucky (or should I say blessed) that none of our trees came down. On the next road over, it looks like a war zone. Trees across the road. Trees in yards. Trees on houses. Power lines down everywhere. Result? We're into our third day without power in my house. Power went out Saturday night. Out came the flashlights, the candles, the kerosene lamps, the battery powered radios, and the long johns. Sunday, a friend showed up with a kerosene space heater. That pushed the temperature in the house back up to 69ยบ and made it bearable. Plus we can heat water on the little heater. That means hot coco and herbal tea. It also means I get to shave and

sponge off. Last night we grilled chicken outside on our big charcoal grill. Tonight, another friend is bringing over a two-burner camp stove. And yet another friend has invited us over for dinner and showers at their place. Yup, ya need friends to get through these kinds of disasters. And all in all, it hasn't been too bad. Sure it's a pain to have to keep the milk outside in a snow bank, and it's hard to read by candle light, but on the other hand we've got heat, light and hot food to eat. And the best thing of all is that not one of the trees around my house came down. Nothing in my yard to clean up but all of those leaves. And I'll get right on that one...just as soon as the snow melts.
