It snowed last night! Can you believe it? Snow in October. I was definitely not ready for this. I haven't raked up the leaves yet. I haven't picked up the grandson's toys from the yard. I haven't got the storm windows up. I haven't bought the snow blower or the ice-melt. I haven't braced myself for the idea of winter yet. Snow in October is just wrong. Yet there it was, a thin blanket of white covering everything. And slippery roads. Everybody forgot that
they've lived in New England all of their lives. I got to crawl along at 30 mph in a long line of timid drivers. My normal 30 minute commute took almost an hour. We all agree that this is just a freak storm and that it won't last. But then there's the spectre of the storm to follow. It's coming Saturday night. It's supposed to drop up to six inches of snow on us. No, I am truly not ready for this. And it's funny - I've lived in the northern tier almost my entire life, but I'm never prepared for winter. Don't get me wrong - I love winter. I love snow and cold and all of the other stuff that goes along with winter. I'm just never prepared for it when it comes. It always sneaks up on me and takes me unaware, even though I know that it's fast approaching. Maybe I'm just in a sort of denial. I want the autumn to go on indefinitely, and it always surprises me when it doesn't. So, I guess, in a way, this marks the first winter day, even though the first day of winter is still two months away. And I guess I'd better pull the gloves and scarfs out of storage and dust off the snow shovels. Looks like it's gonna be a long, cold winter this year. Looks like that snow blower is gonna come in mighty handy.
